Make your home a safe environment

Unfortunately, this often is a job that is overlooked. Making the home a pet friendly environment can lower the risk of serious pet accidents occurring. As a pet owner we need to be aware of several potential dangers. Things in the home that we take for granted can kill or seriously injure our pets included are some kinds of house plants(dieffenbachia, philodendron, hyacinth, and mistletoe), pesticides, and even our own medications. Electrical cords that are laying loose on the floor are just right for a game of tug of war but are extremely hazardous when chewed. So keep harmful objects out of your pet’s reach. A little thought given to our pets surroundings maybe just enough of a prevention to avoid a pet tragedy from happening in our home.

Make sure your pet receives a complete check-up

A regular visit to the veterinarian is the most overlooked pet health need today, according to, a veterinarian. Most pet owners only take their pet to a veterinarian when there is already a health problem or for routine vaccinations. Vaccinations and regular check ups for diseases are the keys to successfully taking care of our pets health.

Design a diet and exercise plan to meet your pet’s specific needs

Overfeeding our pets leads to serious health problems such as heart disease.Exercise is also important to their wellbeing, but a they will only exercise if there is a treat or something in it for them. No chocolate treats please! Chocolate contains a toxic substance, theobromine, which is harmful to our pets. So, just say NO! The right kind of food and physical activity, taking into account their age and condition, can add to the quality of our pet’s life.

General pet care tips:

  • Remember no chocolate for our pets, please! Chocolate contains a toxic substance. So, just say NO!
  • Make sure they have a warm environment because a pet that is exposed to bitter cold and becomes lethargic, depressed, and weak, could be hypothermic. Call your veterinarian immediately.
  • Did you know that by shivering, our pet is trying to warm its body back to normal temperature.
  • Spills of liquids on the driveway or garage floor should be dealt with immediately. Even a small lick by a small pet could be enough to poison it. Clean up those spills fast!
  • Remember that even the most gentle and trusting pet may actually bite you when they are in pain or discomfort. If you need to muzzle your pet, use a soft towel or cloth strips and remove them as soon as possible to let your pet breathe more easily.
  • If an injured or sick animal has to be transported, use a blanket, vinyl mat, and even a door to make a stretcher. Try to immobilize them to avoid further stress.
  • You should provide a safe environment, quality diet, exercise, and proper veterinary care for your pet
